Representative Tackey Chan named House Chair of Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure for 2019-20 Session

BOSTON – State Representative Tackey Chan (D-Quincy) has been named House Chair of the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure for the 191st Legislative Session. The appointment was confirmed today by the House Democratic Caucus following the recommendation of House Speaker Robert DeLeo.

“I thank Speaker DeLeo and my colleagues for the opportunity to continue serving as Chair of the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure for the 2019-20 session,” said Representative Chan. “This committee deals with many complex regulatory matters and I look forward to digging into these issues alongside Senator Paul Feeney and our committee members.”

The Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure considers legislation concerning the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission, the racing industry, the state lottery system, and any matter of professional licensure outside of medical licensing. The Committee also considers any consumer protection matters that fall within Chapter 93A of the Massachusetts General Laws. In the previous session, the committee oversaw passage of a comprehensive consumer data security bill which was signed into law in January.

Representative Chan, whose family is from Hong Kong, was the first Asian-American to be appointed chair of a committee in the House of Representatives when he assumed the position in July 2017. Prior to this position, Representative Chan served as Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy, as well as Acting Chair of the Committee on Small Business and Community Development for 18 months during the 2013-2014 legislative session.  He served on the Joint Committee of Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure from 2011 to 2016.   Representative Chan was first elected in 2010, and is currently serving his fifth term as State Representative of the Second Norfolk District.
